Australian Youth Orchestra to perform Mood: Mahler and Wagner, July 13 in Geelong
The AYO's flagship orchestra, conducted by the internationally acclaimed Nicholas Carter, including Geelong-born trumpeter Harvey de Koster among its talented musicians
Geelong - The Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO), Australia's most prestigious youth ensemble, returns to Geelong for a powerful performance of Mood: Mahler and Wagner on Saturday, 13 July at Costa Hall, Geelong/Djilang.

The concert will showcase the talents of nearly 100 young musicians from across Australia, including Geelong's own Harvey de Koster. Harvey was introduced to the brass band world by his brothers at the age of 4. His lifelong passion for music led him to Melbourne Youth Orchestras (MYO) programs, where he discovered the wonders of orchestral playing.
Harvey has had the incredible opportunity to learn from some of Australia's great trumpet players throughout his musical journey. He has performed with the Geelong Symphony Orchestra on multiple occasions, including as principal trumpet. Now, he joins his fellow talented young musicians from around the country to bring the music of Mahler, Grandage, and Wagner to life under the baton of internationally acclaimed conductor Nicholas Carter.
The program includes Wagner's transcendent Prelude und Liebestod, Mahler's bold Symphony No.5, and the world premiere of Overt by Australian composer Iain Grandage, written in honour of Colin Cornish AM, who led AYO from 2005 to 2023.
Conductor Nicholas Carter said: ‘It’s always a huge joy for me to work with youth orchestras. The ambition, dedication and passion that these wonderful young musicians display is truly inspiring to me. To bring the music of Mahler, Grandage and Wagner to life with the AYO will certainly be a highlight of my year!’
