AT LAST!

THE LUNCHBOX IS LANDING AT THE

PRINCESS THEATRE

Live music at lunch comes to Launceston in a new series of concerts presented by Van Diemen’s Band

I can’t believe I can fit a musical experience like this into the middle of my day for

ten dollars. It’s wild!  - Lunchbox Concert audience member

Launceston- You’d better believe it! Launceston now becomes part of what has become the busiest and most wide-ranging music series in the State: the famous Lunchbox Concerts, presented by Van Diemen’s Band.

For an online cost of just $10 ($15 if you’re buying at the door on the day of the concert), visitors to the Princess Theatre at 1.05 on Wednesdays from 5 June will hear the State’s best musicians – as well as visitors from interstate and, on occasion, overseas) – in short concerts that end just in time for office workers to get back to their desks, or city shoppers to return to the fray.

“We’re delighted to be in Launceston!” says VDB’s Artistic Director and the Lunchbox series curator Julia Fredersdorff. “We’re so grateful to our partners there and the Princess Theatre for enabling us to maintain the same low door price as it has been elsewhere for several years in a row in order to bring quality music-making to those who are counting the dollars in these straightened times. For our artists, we can now provide performance opportunities around the State. And with pataway/Burnie already on stream, it also means that the majority of our Lunchbox presentations now take place in the North.”

The Lunchbox offering in this first Launceston season of five starting on 5 June is wide and includes instruments such as mandolin, piano accordion. vintage saxophones and harpsichord in addition to more standard ‘classical’ fare. Every concert is a different sonic adventure:

CONCERT 1: WEDNESDAY 5 JUNE - LUKE PLUMB & JAMES CRABB

Experience the virtuosic wizardry of two absolute masters of their craft: Tasmanian mandolinist Luke Plumb and Scottish-born, Australian-based James Crabb (piano accordion), lighting up the stage with a stunning mix of folk, world and mando-pop!

CONCERT 2: WEDNESDAY 12 JUNE - QUERCUS TRIO

A piano trio with a difference! Combining French horn, violin and piano, Melbourne’s Quercus Trio bring their unique colours to a program of Elena Kats-Chernin, Larry Sitsky and Peter Sculthorpe.

CONCERT 3: WEDNESDAY 19 JUNE - MINI VAN DIEMEN'S BAND

A pocket-sized version of VDB performs a tempting selection of Baroque favourites. VDB Artistic Director Julia Fredersdorff (Baroque violin) is joined by Katie Yap (viola), Donald Nicolson (on VDB’s fabulous new harpsichord!) and special guests.

CONCERT 4: WEDNESDAY 26 JUNE - XYRIS QUARTET

Discover the beguiling sounds of vintage saxophones, with Benjamin Price (soprano), Jabra Latham (alto), Thomas McKay (tenor) & Eva Nilssen (baritone) performing music by JS Bach alongside new Tasmanian works.

And Concert 5? “It’s a surprise”, says Fredersdorff. “Sort of a mystery gift. All will be revealed – and we promise the surprise will be worth the wait!”

Tickets are just $15 if paying by cash at the door, but even cheaper if purchased online (vandiemensband.com.au) – just $10 per concert, or $50 if pre-paying for the entire five-concert series.

Van Diemen's Band—Based in the wild and unspoiled island state of Tasmania at the southernmost tip of Australia, Australia's Baroque supergroup Van Diemen's Band breathes new life into historically informed performance, delivering extraordinary performances across lutruwita / Tasmania and beyond.

Van Diemen's Band is made up of some of the country's most highly respected early music specialists. Between them, they have worked with leading ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants, Les Talens Lyriques, Ensemble Pygmalion, Il Pomo d'Oro, Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, The English Concert, Academy of Ancient Music, Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Le Parlement de Musique, and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra.

Founded in 2016 by violinist Julia Fredersdorff, VDB varies in size from an intimate chamber group to a larger orchestra. VDB explores the creativity and expressiveness of the baroque while deferring to historical sources on style and instrumentation.

Always seeking to break new ground, VDB has collaborated with guest artists such as French Baroque specialist Martin Gester, Persian/Afghani musicians Ensemble Kaboul and Tasmanian mandolin player Luke Plumb, and released a music video, Song of the Birds, in 2021.

VDB has performed for Ten Days on the Island, Dark Mofo and Mona Foma, toured nationally for Musica Viva Australia and internationally for Chamber Music New Zealand, and has recorded for ABC Classic and the prestigious Swedish label BIS.

VDB is also an active concert presenter in lutruwita/Tasmania, presenting Lunchbox Concerts in nipaluna/Hobart and pataway/Burnie, and delivers a range of education and community engagement programs each year.
