Van Diemen's Band Lunchbox Concert Series Returns to nipaluna/Hobart for Spring 2024
nipaluna/Hobart - Van Diemen's Band, 'Australia's Baroque supergroup', in association with the City of Hobart, has announced the hugely popular Lunchbox Concert series in the Hobart Town Hall Ballroom returns for the Spring season in 2024.
Curated by VDB's artistic director, Julia Fredersdorff, our immensely popular lunchtime concert series returns to the Hobart Town Hall for the second of three series in 2024. Escape the hustle and bustle and step into an oasis of calm, listening to beautiful music in a casual and welcoming setting, with an eclectic music program spanning various genres and styles - all for the price of a sandwich!
Julia Fredersdorff says, "The Lunchbox Concerts have become a much-loved institution in nipaluna/Hobart, offering our audiences a chance to experience world-class music in an intimate and accessible setting. The Spring 2024 series showcases the incredible breadth and talent of our local and visiting artists, from the joyful cross-cultural collaboration of 'Song of the Birds' to the rare treat of hearing the baryton in concert. There's something for everyone to enjoy."
Concert #1: Tuesday 20 August - SONG OF THE BIRDS
This special concert presentation welcomes guests from nipaluna/Hobart's Japanese Sister City, Yaizu. Featuring performances from Yurikamome Children's Choir and nipaluna/Hobart's Mount Carmel College Choir, this cross-cultural Lunchbox culminates in a performance of 'Song of the Birds' with the divine sounds of VDB and massed children's choir.
Concert #2: Tuesday 27 August - GRYPHON BARYTON TRIO
Australia's only baryton returns for its second-ever performance in lutruwita/Tasmania! This superb program features chamber works by Joseph Haydn, performed with their intended instrumentation. The baryton is a rare and unusual instrument (like a viola da gamba with sympathetic strings) which caused a sensation in the 18th Century Esterházy court, only to disappear again 30 years later. Laura Vaughan (baryton) joins Katie Yap (viola) and Martin Penicka (cello) for a Lunchbox full of invention and colour, with a veritable feast of low instruments creating unique and beautiful sonority.
Concert #3: Tuesday 3 September - ALEXEY YEMTSOV
A Lunchbox favourite, Ukraine-born lutruwita/Tasmanian-based pianist Alexey Yemtsov plays a program featuring Chopin's Fantasie in F minor Op.49 alongside works by Scriabin and Schubert.
Concert #4: Tuesday 10 September - LUKE PLUMB & KHALIDA DE RIDDER
A meeting of musical minds - mandolin wizard Luke Plumb joins forces with classical/folk violinist Khalida de Ridder. Now back in Australia after years abroad playing with the cream of the international Celtic music scene, they bring their combined virtuosity to traditional melodies.
Concert #5: Tuesday 17 September - VAN DIEMEN'S VOICES
Introducing.... Van Diemen's Voices! Directed by acclaimed lutruwitan/Tasmanian vocalist, composer and music director Quin Thomson, VDV explores the incredible array of music written for vocal ensemble. This sublimely meditative performance celebrates reflective and transfixing works from the 12th-13th Centuries, including the mystic and visionary abbess, Hildegard of Bingen, alongside works by 21st century lutruwitan/Tasmanian composers Quin Thomson, Teri Young and Emily Sheppard. Interspersed with instrumental interludes, these entrancing vocal performances will bring the Spring Lunchbox Concert series to a captivating close.
"I can't believe I can fit a world-class experience like this into the middle of my day for $10. It's wild. A transporting, beautiful interlude which takes me out of the noise and into the music. Thank you." - Audience member
"A great way to hear beautiful work (sometimes familiar, sometimes not) at a ridiculously good price." - Audience member
Tickets are just $15 if paying by cash at the door, but even cheaper if purchased online (vandiemensband.com.au) – just $10 per concert, or $50 if pre-paying for the entire five-concert series.

Van Diemen's Band—Based in the wild and unspoiled island state of Tasmania at the southernmost tip of Australia, Australia's Baroque supergroup Van Diemen's Band breathes new life into historically informed performance, delivering extraordinary performances across lutruwita / Tasmania and beyond.
Van Diemen's Band is made up of some of the country's most highly respected early music specialists, who between them have worked with leading ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants, Les Talens Lyriques, Ensemble Pygmalion, Il Pomo d'Oro, Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, The English Concert, Academy of Ancient Music, Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Le Parlement de Musique, and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra.
Founded in 2016 by violinist Julia Fredersdorff, VDB varies in size from an intimate chamber group to a larger orchestra. VDB explores the creativity and expressiveness of the baroque while deferring to historical sources on style and instrumentation.
Always seeking to break new ground, VDB has collaborated with guest artists such as French Baroque specialist Martin Gester, Persian/Afghani musicians Ensemble Kaboul and Tasmanian mandolin player Luke Plumb, and released a music video, Song of the Birds, in 2021.
VDB has performed for Ten Days on the Island, Dark Mofo and Mona Foma, toured nationally for Musica Viva Australia and internationally for Chamber Music New Zealand, and has recorded for ABC Classic and the prestigious Swedish label BIS.
VDB is also an active concert presenter in lutruwita/Tasmania, presenting Lunchbox Concerts in nipaluna/Hobart and pataway/Burnie, and delivers a range of education and community engagement programs each year.
