Australian Youth Orchestra to perform Mood: Mahler and Wagner, July 13 in Geelong

The AYO's flagship orchestra, conducted by the internationally acclaimed Nicholas Carter, including Geelong-born musicians among its talented performers

Geelong - The Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO), Australia's most prestigious youth ensemble, returns to Geelong for a powerful performance of Mood: Mahler and Wagner on Saturday, 13 July at Costa Hall, Geelong/Djilang.

Press are invited to review.

The concert will showcase the talents of nearly 100 young musicians from across Australia, including several Geelong-based performers:

Harvey de Koster - Geelong-born trumpeter. Harvey was introduced to the brass band world by his brothers at age 4, and his lifelong passion for music led him to the Melbourne Youth Orchestras programs, where he discovered his love for orchestral playing. He has performed with the Geelong Symphony Orchestra, including as principal trumpet, and now joins the AYO to bring the music of Mahler, Grandage, and Wagner to life.

Edmund Mantelli - Violist from Greater Geelong. Edmund has performed symphonic concerts in Costa Hall since the age of 9, and has gone on to perform nationwide, studying with renowned violists and leading orchestras. This will be his first time playing in Costa Hall with the AYO.

Grace Hordern - Harpist completing her Bachelor of Music Performance at the Melbourne Conservatorium. Grace's love of the harp began through hearing Tchaikovsky's ballets, and she has since performed in solo, chamber and orchestral settings, including international tours.

The program includes Wagner's transcendent "Prelude und Liebestod", Mahler's bold "Symphony No. 5", and the world premiere of "Overt" by Australian composer Iain Grandage, written in honor of former AYO leader Colin Cornish AM.

Conductor Nicholas Carter said: It's always a huge joy for me to work with youth orchestras. The ambition, dedication and passion that these wonderful young musicians display is truly inspiring to me. To bring the music of Mahler, Grandage and Wagner to life with the AYO will certainly be a highlight of my year!

Don't miss this unforgettable afternoon of drama with Mood: Mahler and Wagner, as the Australian Youth Orchestra, featuring talented musicians from Geelong, takes the stage at Costa Hall.

Know a young person who hasn't tried classical music? AYO is offering people under the age of 26 who purchase a $30 ticket to the Costa Hall performance the opportunity to give Mahler and Wagner a try. If they don't love it by interval, they can receive a full refund at the box office. Conditions apply, please see https://ayo.com.au/events for details.

The Australian Youth Orchestra- Ed Le Brocq (ABC Classic FM) recently described The Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) as ‘one of Australia’s best orchestras’. In fact, AYO is one of the world’s most prestigious and innovative training organisations for young musicians. It holds a vital and unique place in Australia’s musical landscape, bringing together exceptional artists, tutors and young musicians from every corner of the country and beyond. AYO concerts are high-energy, edge of your chair experiences and are perfect for newcomers as well as seasoned audiences.

Our training pathway has been created to nurture the musical development of Australia’s finest young instrumentalists across metropolitan and regional Australia: from the emerging, gifted, school-aged student to those on the verge of a professional career. AYO presents tailored training and performance programs each year for aspiring musicians, composers, arts administrators and music journalists aged 12 to 30.

When Professor John Bishop OBE and Ruth Alexander convened the first National Music Camp in 1948, they created an institution that would fire the imaginations of over 12,000 young Australian musicians, see its orchestras tour the globe and instil in its participants a love of music and a dedication to the highest standards of performance.

AYO occupies a special place in the musical culture of Australia, where one generation of brilliant musicians inspires the next, where aspiring musicians get a taste of life as professional musicians, and where like-minded individuals from all over the country gather for intense periods to learn from each other, study and perform. On the world stage, AYO has established itself as a cultural ambassador for Australia on twenty-three international tours since its first in 1970.

Today, countless AYO alumni are members of some of the finest professional orchestras worldwide.
