International Harmony: Hobart and Yaizu Choirs Unite with Van Diemen's Band in Celebration of Sister City Bond
nipaluna/Hobart, Tasmania - In a vibrant display of international friendship, nipaluna/Hobart will host a special lunchtime concert featuring young voices from both Tasmania and Japan. Set for Tuesday, 20 August, the event celebrates the enduring sister-city relationship between Hobart and Yaizu.
Song of the Birds will bring together the Yurikamome Children's Choir from Yaizu and nipaluna/Hobart's Mount Carmel College Choir in a cross-cultural collaboration. The performance will feature Van Diemen's Band, Tasmania's renowned Baroque ensemble, known for breathing new life into historically informed performances.
The concert marks nearly 50 years of friendship between Hobart and Yaizu, a relationship officially established in 1977. Built on shared interests in fishing industries and strengthened through educational exchanges, this sister-city bond continues to flourish.
This collaboration was made possible by support from the Australia- Japan Foundation under their 2023-24 grant round, in recognition of the significant contribution that the sister city relations makes to the bilateral relationship between Australia and Japan.
City of Hobart representative said, This event exemplifies the spirit of our sister city relationship with Yaizu. Through music, we continue to build bridges between our communities, fostering understanding and friendship among our young people.
Van Diemen's Band artistic director Julia Fredersdorff says, We are thrilled to welcome the Yurikamome Children's Choir from Yaizu to perform alongside our local Mount Carmel College Choir and Van Diemen's Band. This concert is a beautiful manifestation of the sister city relationship between Hobart and Yaizu. Through the universal language of music, particularly in our performance of 'Song of the Birds', we're bridging cultures and fostering international friendship. It's a unique opportunity for our community to experience the harmony that can be created when we bring together diverse voices and traditions.
