FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Statement from Jayson Gillham regarding his retention of legal counsel and the MSO's announcement of an independent review
Melbourne - 26 August 2024
Jayson Gillham stated:
I have instructed Marque Lawyers and Sheryn Omeri KC to represent me, and they have written to the MSO regarding the legal implications of its actions.
After careful consideration, I felt that instructing lawyers was the appropriate course of action, as I feel strongly about artists' right to freedom of expression.
As I have previously stated, I do not believe it is reasonable to expect artists to be citizens of the world, exploring the full gamut of the human experience in their work, whilst simultaneously being bland, apolitical entities that appeal to everyone and offend no one.
Gillham added that he is awaiting the MSO's response to his legal representatives and that he is keenly interested in ensuring that the review they have announced is sufficiently comprehensive to uncover the full extent of what transpired and to guarantee that no artist will be treated in a similar manner in the future.
