ABC Chair Kim Williams AM Discusses Future of Public Broadcasting on Decoding Cultural Leadership Podcast

The latest episode of the Decoding Cultural Leadership podcast features an in-depth conversation with Kim Williams AM, the newly appointed Chair of the ABC, discussing his vision for Australia's national broadcaster and the future of public media.

In the episode, which drops Monday, 2 September at 8am, Williams shares insights on:

  • Ensuring the ABC's contemporary relevance in a changing media landscape

  • Navigating challenges in public discourse and social media

  • Championing Australian stories and creativity

  • Balancing familiarity with innovation in programming

  • The role of public broadcasting in cultural leadership

Williams articulates his vision for the ABC, stating, "The ABC exists as the national campfire of Australia - a place for sharing stories, shared history, and creative experiences. If the ABC is not at the heartland of Australian storytelling, one knows that it's losing its way."

Kim Williams AM brings a unique perspective to the role of ABC Chair, having traversed the arts and media landscape at the highest levels for decades. His career spans leadership roles in commercial media, arts organisations, and cultural institutions, including CEO of FOXTEL, Chief Executive at News Corp Australia, and leadership positions at the Sydney Opera House Trust, Australian Film Commission, and multiple symphony orchestras.

Known as a change-maker and innovator, Williams' insights are particularly relevant to current discourse on the future of public broadcasting and cultural leadership in Australia. His extensive experience across both public and private sectors uniquely positions him to address the challenges and opportunities the ABC faces in the contemporary media landscape.

The episode also explores broader themes of cultural leadership, the challenges facing publicly funded institutions, and the importance of fostering Australian creative talent in a globalised media environment.

Decoding Cultural Leadership host Samuel Cairnduff said, "Kim Williams AM brings an unparalleled perspective to the role of ABC Chair. His extensive career traversing the arts and media at the highest levels, coupled with his reputation as a change-maker, makes his insights on the future of public broadcasting particularly valuable. Williams' vision for the ABC as a 'national campfire' speaks to the heart of cultural leadership in Australia today."

The episode will be available from 8am Monday, 2 September on all major podcast platforms, and at: https://samuelcairnduff.com/podcast/
