IMG Artists Welcomes Umberto Clerici to Roster for General Management

IMG Artists is delighted to welcome conductor Umberto Clerici to our roster for general management. He is represented by Global Artist Management Consultant Nicholas Mathias and Senior Vice President Derek Chandruang from the London office.

After a career spanning more than 20 years as a gifted cello soloist and orchestral musician, Umberto has consolidated his diverse artistic achievements to rapid acclaim as a conductor. He is currently the Chief Conductor of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Umberto’s 2024 conducting engagements include conducting Elgar’s Cello Concerto with Steven Isserlis for the Volksoper Vienna, and debuts with Orchestra del Teatro Massimo in Palermo and Orchestra Regionale Toscana. He also curated a three-week series with the Sydney Symphony for ‘Symphony Hour’ and returned to the podiums of the Dunedin, Melbourne and West Australian Symphony Orchestras.

Earlier this season Umberto made his debut with Opera Queensland in Verdi’s Macbeth and will return next season to lead a production of Puccini’s La bohème. Highlights in 2025 include conducting pianist Daniil Trifonov playing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3 with New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and a return engagement to Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

Umberto said, “I am honoured to be joining IMG Artists’ high-calibre roster and, more particularly, to be represented by Derek Chandruang and Nicholas Mathias who bring a rare combination of artistic purpose, ambition and experience. I am delighted to have found my artistic home so swiftly and look forward to this next chapter on the global stage.  The future feels bright and full of music in this new year, and for many more to come.”

Nicholas said, “I am really delighted to welcome Umberto to the IMG Artists roster and very much look forward to being involved in developing his future international career. Following the earlier part of his career as an outstanding cellist, Umberto made a really seamless transition into conducting several years ago and I have no doubt that the considerable success he has already achieved will continue in the coming years.”

Derek said, “I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with Umberto, a phenomenal musician and conductor who is already making positive impressions wherever he goes! I very much look forward to supporting his artistic growth and the development of his career over the coming years, and doing so alongside my trusted collaborators Ken Matsubara at Hirasa for Japan and Elaine Armstrong at Emblem Arts for Australasia. Grateful to be part of this wonderful team!”

As a cellist, Umberto remains beloved by audiences worldwide, having performed internationally as a soloist at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Vienna’s Musicverein, the great Shostakovich Hall of St Petersburg, Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, the Salzburg Festival and is one of only two Italians to have ever won a prize for cello in the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition.
