Available now for download and streaming, this groundbreaking album reveals these masterworks as they've never been heard before.
Italian-Australian pianist Jonathan Ferrucci, prize winner at the International Bach Competition in Leipzig and acclaimed performer at prestigious venues including Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Weill Hall, and the Fazioli Concert Hall, announces the release of his debut album "Bach The Toccatas." This groundbreaking recording presents Bach's seven keyboard toccatas – among his most "rebellious" youthful works – in state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos sound. Startlingly bold in expression and powerful in the design of their fugues, these experimental works reveal the laboratory where Bach ultimately found his distinctive style.
Adding to their mystique, no original manuscripts of Bach's keyboard toccatas have survived. Written during his time in Arnstadt and early Weimar period as he established himself as a renowned organist, these works follow in the tradition of Girolamo Frescobaldi, who established the toccata as a form of musical experimentation. The pieces showcase an extraordinary range of expression, from glittering improvisations and energetic fugues to expressive arias and folk-inspired dances.
"These toccatas rank among Bach's most innovative keyboard works. When I play them, I feel as though I were composing the music together with Bach in that moment – that's what creates this incredible sense of spontaneity and his delight in invention.
Each toccata reveals the composer's youthful energy and creative freedom, as well as his architectural vision. My interpretation aims to capture the experimental nature of these works, bringing a fresh perspective to these historical compositions."
Uniquely, Ferrucci's approach integrates his background in yoga with his musical interpretation.
"Music and Yoga are both tools of enquiry and introspection," he explains. "They are practices of devotion that inform my understanding and performance of these works."
Biography - Born in Florence to an Australian mother and Italian father, Ferrucci brings a distinctive cultural perspective to his interpretation. His artistic journey has been profoundly shaped by studies with renowned musicians, including Angela Hewitt, with whom he has worked since 2014, Robert Levin, Aldo Ciccolini, and Zhu Xiao-Mei. He has also participated in masterclasses with Murray Perahia, Richard Goode, and Christian Zacharias.
This recording represents the latest chapter in Ferrucci's deep exploration of Bach's music, following his acclaimed performances of the Goldberg Variations across the UK, Italy, and the US. A dedicated Ashtanga Yoga practitioner, Ferrucci integrates this practice into his musical approach, creating a unique synthesis of physical awareness and artistic expression. http://www.jonathanferrucci.com/
