Truth, Lies & Media: Nicole Chvastek & Denis Muller launch new podcast exposing the realities of Australian journalism

Just in time for the upcoming federal election, broadcast journalist Nicole Chvastek and Australia's pre-eminent journalism ethics expert Denis Muller are launching a hard-hitting new podcast, Truth, Lies & Media

Building on their acclaimed ABC Radio program Behind the Media, the duo will dissect the biggest headlines each week—revealing the good, the bad, and the ugly of Australian journalism and uncovering the motivations behind media narratives.

The first episode, Attack Dogs, premiered last week on Wednesday, 5 March 2025, and examines how Trump’s MAGA-aligned reporters have evolved from watchdogs to aggressive enforcers, silencing dissent and shaping a dangerous media landscape.

Chvastek and Muller bring decades of journalistic experience to the microphone. Nicole Chvastek, a veteran broadcast journalist, is renowned for her incisive interviews and fearless questioning of public figures. She spent over 11 years hosting ABC Radio Victoria’s statewide drive program, holding politicians and decision-makers to account. Dr Denis Muller, a former associate editor at The Age and assistant editor at The Sydney Morning Herald, is one of Australia’s foremost experts on media ethics, currently serving as a senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Advancing Journalism.

Together, they will unpack media missteps, hold journalists to account, and expose the forces shaping public discourse. In a time when truth is under siege, Truth, Lies & Media is essential listening for anyone who cares about the role of journalism in democracy.
